This photo is from a “styled shoot.” If you are in the wedding profession you know styled photo shoots are produced to highlight a wedding venue, show off new trends and generally express creativity for all vendors involved. Although my photography focuses primarily on real life moments I have participated in a few of these styled photo shoots over the years. It is fun to collaborate with my friends in the wedding world. Except, here is the thing- just Google “styled wedding photo shoots” and see what comes up. It is about 90% (my guesstimated number) white model looking “couples.” This has always bothered me because these shoots are supposed to be aspirational. What we show and present as beautiful and perfect and “Pinterest” worthy is usually very Caucasian. This is just my personal experience, of the few styled shoots I have been a part of only one has highlighted an African American couple or a couple of any color for that matter. Did I raise concerns or think too deeply when photographing those white models, no, I did not and I am sorry about that. But I promise that I will from now on.
I love being in the wedding industry. When I am photographing such a major life moment for a couple I am literally smiling all day. I can’t imagine doing anything else. I know it is a privilege and an honor to be the one to capture those memories. I know that we can do better and be better in the visuals we choose to put out in the world when it comes to inspired and styled content.
